Empowering community wellness | YouAlberta

One person can make a difference in your life and the lives of others. As university students, we face several challenges to our wellness: healthy eating, getting 8 hours of sleep, mental health and ensuring effective studying habits. Imagine meeting all of your wellness needs — you slept a good 8 hours, you met your nutritional needs, you landed your dream job and you were heard. How would you bring that to life with $5,000?

Have you heard about the Heroes for Health Grant? This grant allocates $5,000 for student-led initiatives that make our campus a healthier place for students. Our university has approximately 44,000 students, meaning 44,000 definitions of a healthy campus.

This grant empowers U of A students to take in their environments, identify barriers to wellness and propose ideas to enhance wellness — whether it’s proposing better sleep resources, how to make friends or creating a more caring campus community.

Bring out your inner innovator and become a health hero! Each of you, in your different fields of studies, life experiences and loved ones, have an important contribution to share. With constantly changing technology and social needs, here’s a chance to think about how we can connect these to better our health and experience during our time at the U of A.

You can submit your ideas solo or as a team. Students who apply for the grant will receive feedback on their submissions, so no matter what, submitting your ideas does make a difference!

The best part of submitting is the chance that you could see your idea come to life through the Heroes for Health Grant!

Bring your ideas that target one or more of the following areas:

  • Physical health, social health and mental health
    • This can also include areas of well-being such as environmental, financial, academic and spiritual
  • Creating safe, accessible and connected campuses
  • Fostering a student-centred learning environment
  • Promoting relationship building, fostering connections and belonging on our campus
  • Supporting transitions into university and graduation

Look out for upcoming Heroes for Health events and outreach where you can share your ideas or speak with one of our team members.

Applications are open and due on February 7, 2025, so you have lots of time to work on this!
